A facelift surgery is a type of facial plastic surgery that is performed to correct varying degrees of age in the face and neck. The face and neck are almost always where the signs of aging first appear. You may think and feel very young but may have a very tired or sad appearance as the neck and jawline begin to sag and lose their youthful contours. You may notice wrinkles and creases in your face and around the eye with furrows and frown lines on your forehead. Marionette lines begin to form between your cheeks and chin while creases set into the nasolabial folds at the corners of your mouth.
Renowned Facial Plastic Surgeon expert, Dr. Kyle Choe, performs facial plastic surgery in Virginia Beach for his local patients, as well as hundreds that travel to the state of the art AAAHC accredited Facial Plastic Surgery Center each year to achieve a naturally attractive and youthful appearance. As evidenced by Dr. Choe’s numerous glowing patient testimonials, he is considered the best facelift surgeon in Virginia Beach and surrounding areas.
About Facelift Surgery
The fat in your cheeks descend, leaving you with sagging jowls, while the fat in your neck increases forming a double chin or creases that leave you with deep, unsightly bands. You may develop “turkey waddle” as the neck muscles (platysma) lose their elasticity, weaken and sag.
The causes may be hereditary or environmental (lifestyle). It doesn’t matter – it happens to all of us! That’s the bad news – the good news is here at The Choe Center in Virginia Beach, VA we can safely and effectively turn back the clock at least 10 years with one of our facelift procedures such as the Mini-Facelift or the Mid-Facelift.
We have also included a listing of typical complementary procedures patients choose to have in addition to their facelift.
Are you a candidate?
Every patient who undergoes facelift surgery must be in good overall health. Any history of heart conditions or disease, or any autoimmune conditions warrant telling the surgeon prior to the procedure.
Good candidates for this procedure should also have sufficient skin elasticity, due to the fact that the skin will be stretched during the procedure.
Having realistic expectations about the outcome of surgery is also vital. Although surgery can provide you with a more youthful look, you must be realistic in what is possible and what may be accomplished. You will look like you do now, only improved.
What is the Facelift Procedure?
Most facelift procedures begin with either general or local anesthesia. They can also include sedation, where you are fully awake, but numbed to any pain.
Incisions are then created along the hairline and around the ears. Skin is then lifted away from the face, and the underlying tissue rearranged. Excess skin is removed, and the remaining skin re-draped over the face. The incisions are closed with sutures, and the procedure is complete.
A post-operative appointment will usually occur the day following surgery. During this appointment, your bandages may be changed by the surgeon. However, no sutures or staples will be removed for an additional 4-5 days following surgery.
Sometimes, other procedures are performed at the same time as a face lift. These procedures can include blepharoplasty and the injection of dermal fillers. Of course, these procedures will need to be collaborated on by both the patient and the surgeon so that the patient’s desired look can be achieved.
Full Facelift Recovery
You may experience mild to moderate discomfort in the days following facelift surgery. Painkillers are usually prescribed for this. Antibiotics may also be prescribed in order to ward off infection. Bruising and swelling are very common with this procedure and can take some time to dissipate.
Physical activity be limited following face lift surgery, particularly any activity which involves the muscles in the face or may lead to injury. Although the surgeon will provide a timeline for each patient’s unique recovery needs, you can expect to be off of work for up to one week following surgery.
