A lot of attention has been given to rhinoplasty lately since the “2013 Rhino-Popularity Report” was released from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS). The survey concludes that rhinoplasty has maintained its position as the “most popular” facial plastic surgery procedure for the third year in a row. Men find this procedure particularly appealing, making it the most performed procedure on males. (It came in 3rd for women.)

Why has rhinoplasty become the leader of facial plastic surgeries? One reason may have to do with the location of the nose. The nose is a central, prominent feature. For surgeries that make a big impact on the appearance of the face, the nose is certainly a top contender. Candidates for rhinoplasty are generally unhappy with their nose due to size, shape, or a deformity that was caused by injury. Others request a nose job to fix a breathing issue. No matter what the reason, there are some important things every patient should know about rhinoplasty before undergoing surgery, including the following:

  1. Rhinoplasty is one of the most complex plastic surgeries. Any change in the structure of the nose can affect a person’s ability to breathe properly. Select an experienced, board certified surgeon when considering a nose job to decrease your risk of complications.
  2. Finding the most qualified surgeon will not guarantee perfection, though they may come close. The national average for rhinoplasty surgeries that require revision is about 15%. Top surgeons can have revision rates in the low single-digits, but no one can deliver flawless results 100% of the time.
  3. You can reduce your chances of needing revision by following any and all pre- and post-surgical instructions carefully. Sometimes, however, unexpected complications can still arise during surgery or recovery through no fault of yours or the surgeon.
  4. Candidates must have realistic expectations. Surgery can only take the nose so far. Repeat surgeries limit how much change can be made due to the development of scarring and absence of cartilage. Even so, incredible results are quite possible that will satisfy even the most hard-to-please patients.
  5. One size does not fit all. You may love Kate Middleton’s nose, but that doesn’t mean it’s right for your face. The best way to achieve natural-looking results is to find a surgeon who takes into account each patient’s unique features. Before and after photos of former patients with a look similar to yours and computer imaging can help you see potential results.
  6. Your nose may not meet your expectations immediately after surgery. The final results of your nose job will not be visible for several months. While most swelling will subside after 3 to 4 months, it can take a full year for some residual swelling to dissipate.
